What is a Maternity Nurse?

A maternity nurse, also known as a postnatal care specialist, is a highly experienced professional who specialises in newborn care and early parental support. Most maternity nurses have a background in childcare, nursery nursing or related infant care and provide non-medical support within the family home.

A private maternity nurse supports both parents and baby after birth and once the family has returned home from hospital. This can include practical newborn care, feeding guidance, sleep and settling support, bathing, changing, sterilising equipment and helping parents recognise their baby’s individual cues. Whether you choose to breastfeed, bottle-feed, express or combine feeding methods, your maternity nurse will respect your decisions and provide guidance suited to your family.

Maternity nurses are often booked during pregnancy, sometimes from as early as 12 weeks, although support can also be arranged after your baby has arrived. The aim of maternity nursing is to give parents time to rest and recover while helping them become calm, informed and confident in caring for their newborn. By the end of the booking, families should feel better prepared to continue independently with a routine or rhythm that works for them.

Your First Six Weeks

Private maternity nurse support is tailored to each stage of your postnatal journey, helping you rest, recover and build confidence as you get to know your newborn. Every family and baby is different, so the support, feeding guidance and daily rhythm will be adapted to suit your individual needs.

0–2 weeks

Respite and Support During the Early Days

During the first few weeks, the focus is on rest, recovery and reassurance. Your maternity nurse can care for your baby throughout the day and overnight, provide practical feeding support and help you understand your newborn’s early cues while you recover from birth.

  • Overnight newborn care so parents can rest and recover
  • Support with breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, combination feeding or expressing
  • Winding, settling, swaddling and safe sleep guidance
  • Help recognising hunger, tiredness and overstimulation cues

2–4 weeks

Building Confidence and Finding Your Rhythm

As you move through the early newborn stage, your maternity nurse will build on what is already working for your family. Feeding may become more established, your baby’s awake periods may begin to change and a gentle daily rhythm can start to develop around your family’s needs.

  • Guidance with latch, paced bottle-feeding, expressing and milk supply
  • Developing a gentle feed, awake and sleep rhythm
  • Support with bathing, changing, nursery care and sterilising equipment
  • Confidence-building handovers so parents can take a more active role

4–6 weeks

Establishing a Rhythm and Preparing for What Comes Next

By four to six weeks, your baby may begin to follow a more recognisable rhythm. Your maternity nurse can help you prepare for growth spurts, developmental changes, immunisations and changes to feeding or sleep, while creating a practical plan for when your maternity nursing support comes to an end.

  • Establishing a flexible rhythm or routine that suits your family
  • Understanding growth spurts and early developmental stages
  • Supporting more settled periods of sleep where appropriate
  • A complete handover plan to help you continue with confidence

Maternity Nurse FAQs

What Does a Maternity Nurse Do?

A maternity nurse provides non-medical newborn care and practical support within the family home. This can include feeding guidance, overnight care, settling, bathing, changing, sterilising equipment and helping parents understand their baby’s cues.

How Long Does a Maternity Nurse Stay?

A live-in maternity nurse may work three to six days a week for several weeks or months, depending on your family’s needs. Many bookings continue for the first six to twelve weeks after birth.

Does a Maternity Nurse Provide Overnight Care?

Yes. A live-in maternity nurse can care for your baby overnight, including feeds, winding and settling, allowing parents time to rest and recover.

When Should I Book a Maternity Nurse?

Many families book during pregnancy, often three to six months before their baby is due. Support can sometimes be arranged after birth, although booking early provides the best chance of securing your preferred dates.

How Much Does a Private Maternity Nurse Cost?

Live-in maternity nurse rates usually range from £300 to £500 per 24 hours, excluding travel, with higher rates sometimes applying at weekends. Costs vary depending on experience, availability and the support required.

What Is the Difference Between a Maternity Nurse and a Night Nanny?

A maternity nurse usually provides day and night support during the newborn stage, helping with feeding, sleep, routines and parent education. A night nanny focuses mainly on overnight care so parents can sleep while feeds, winding and settling are taken care of.
